Stretching your blonde to 12 weeks

4 min read

The longest gap between balayage appointments isn't a function of money — it's a function of how well the colour wears. With the right routine, 12-14 weeks is realistic. Here's how.

Wash less often

Two to three times a week is the target. Each wash takes a tiny amount of toner with it. Dry shampoo at the roots can buy you an extra day, easily.

Cool water at the end

Hot water swells the cuticle and lets pigment escape. Wash warm if you must, then a 10-second cold rinse to seal the cuticle.

Sulfate-free shampoo, always

Sulfates are aggressive and will dull blonde fast. Read the bottle — sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, anything with 'sulfate' is out.

UV protection in summer

The sun is the second-biggest fader after sulfates. A leave-in with UV filter or a hat on the longest beach days will save the colour.

Toner refresh halfway through

A 45-min toner refresh at week 6-7 resets the brassy creep without re-lifting any hair. Cheaper than pulling forward the full balayage and your hair stays in better shape.
