Balayage aftercare — what to do in the first week

4 min read

Fresh balayage is essentially a controlled lift — we've opened the cuticle, deposited tone, and rebuilt the bonds. The first week is when those bonds finish settling. Treat your hair gently and the colour will hold dramatically longer.

The first 24-48 hours

  • Don't wash it. Two days minimum, three is better. The toner needs that time to lock in.
  • Sleep on a silk pillowcase if you have one.
  • Avoid hot tools or, if you must, use a heat protectant and stay below 180°C.

Days 3-7

  • First wash: sulfate-free shampoo, lukewarm water, conditioner only on the mid-lengths and ends.
  • Mask once with a bond-builder (Olaplex No.3 or K18).
  • Skip purple shampoo this week — it's tempting but the toner is already doing the work.

Things to avoid

  • Chlorine and salt water in the first 14 days. If you swim, soak hair in tap water and condition first so it doesn't drink the pool.
  • Tight ponytails right at the roots — leave a little slack.

Stick with that for week one and you've already won most of the battle. The questions clients ask in week 2-12 we'll cover in the next post.
